The eight day event is a celebration of local culture, cuisine, and tradition. The event features live local entertainment from the region who provide up to 60 hours of music and song. Homemade cooking, featuring pot luck and fish dishes, are served. Local vegetables, stored for a nine month period in the root cellars of Elliston, make their way to the kitchen table for a two day “jiggs dinner,” a vegetable dinner served with salt beef and peas pudding.
The Festival, now in its 18th season, features some of the peninsula’s and province’s local artisans’ crafts. For four days, booths display many local cultural products, and artisans can be seen actually creating unique products on site.
The Peninsula Idol Competition, now in its 12th year, showcases some of the amazing young singing talent on the Discovery Trail. People between the ages of 13-25 compete over a five day period for the title of Peninsula Idol. This competition draws huge crowds each year.
For bingo-goers, a full card game takes place each year with the jackpot reaching over $2,000. For adults, the Price is Right Game ($1,000-$2,000 value) is very popular. The dart and bowling challenges, with great prizes, attract many people.
Children’s games such as the Puffin Picks and the Puffin Cash Punch, which is aimed at teenagers, are very popular.
Friday and Saturday night bands provide great entertainment well into the late hours of the night. The beer tent is open from Wednesday to Sunday night.
